Losing a dental crown can be surprising, especially if it happens while you are eating or suddenly notice that a tooth feels different. A lost crown requires prompt dental attention. Let’s talk about how you can protect the exposed tooth and prevent additional damage until you can see your dentist.
Find and Save the Crown
If your crown falls out, look for it and keep it in a safe, clean container. Your dentist may be able to determine whether the crown can be cleaned and reattached or whether a replacement is necessary. Avoid throwing it away, even if it appears damaged.
If you cannot find the crown, don’t panic. Your dentist can still examine the tooth and determine the best way to restore it.
Protect the Exposed Tooth
A tooth without its crown may be more vulnerable to sensitivity, cracks and additional damage. Until you can see your dentist, try to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Hard, crunchy or sticky foods can place unnecessary pressure on the exposed tooth.
You may also experience sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks. Keeping the area clean with gentle brushing can help maintain good oral hygiene while you wait for an appointment.
Don’t Use Household Glue
It can be tempting to try to glue a lost crown back onto your tooth yourself. However, household glues and other non-dental adhesives should never be used in your mouth. They can irritate oral tissues and make it more difficult for your dentist to properly repair the tooth.
If your dentist has specifically instructed you to temporarily reposition a crown using a dental cement available for this purpose, follow those instructions carefully. Otherwise, leave the crown out and bring it to your appointment.
Contact Your Dentist Promptly
Call your dentist as soon as possible after losing a crown. Even if the tooth does not hurt, it is important to have it evaluated. Your dentist can check whether the underlying tooth is still healthy and determine why the crown came loose.
Depending on its condition, the crown may be reattached. If it is damaged, worn or no longer fits properly, your dentist may recommend creating a new crown.
No pressure, but delaying dental care can increase the risk of further damage. Save the crown, protect the exposed tooth and contact your dentist promptly for guidance.
